in the filmmakers tribe there has been some discussion about the emerging prosumer HDV format (1080i) .. this will have a resolution of 1440 x 1080 and be recorded onto standard DV tapes
it is an interlaced format , so it will be better for motion / pan sequences , but it is not going to have a progressive ooptionso it will probably not give the nice clean mattes i was looking forward to ... i guess we shouls celebrate as this is over 2x the resolution of regular DV
aparently cameras will be priced at under $5000 USD
yay

Re: HDV
Sun, May 23, 2004 - 1:42 PMi have been working a lot with HDV lately. i have been using the JVC JY-HD10 which captures a 1280x720 image as an mpeg2 stream on miniDV tapes. this is a NON-interlaced image. fantastic to have the resolution but the 1-ccd nature of the camera combined with intense compression makes for lots of ugly artifcating if the light is too low. several 3-ccd cameras were announced @ NAB and i for one am excited to see them ! the main drawback right now is that the pipeline from capture to edit requires a few tedious conversion steps (in my case --> mpeg2 transport stream to mpeg2 elementary stream to uncompressed quicktime). lots of products are coming out that are going to change this pronto (including FCP adding support to work with the format natively). -
